Swim Lessons

all-boys-before-swim4This past summer we were lucky enough to have a few people sponsor us for multiple weeks of swim lessons.  This is a big deal because the boys like to spend a lot of time near a pool in the summer. So after gearing up with goggles and new towels we headed out. Hayden who has no fear..IE…common sense….jumped in the first day and did everything his instructor Katie said. He progressed to the top of the class within days… By the end of the first week Ian had loosed his grip on the wall and started dipping his head cautiously into the water.  He progressed to following his instructor Al around on a swim noodle… Caleb..by the end of the third week was forming a groove in the concrete wall with the death grip of Hercules and had yet to get his hair wet. Well, knowing that al-and-ianthese classes were necessary and lets face it expensive I had to take matters into my own hands. The look of fear on Caleb’s instuctors face as I approached was priceless… When I gave the FIRM suggestion that he dunk him…and DUNK HIM NOW left him speechless… Caleb had to learn that he could come up from under the water and survive…If Mark could have broken into a sweat in the 70 degree water he would have…Luckly for me Al, a good friend of my oldest son Gavin..was nearby with Ian. I looked at Al and said…Dunk him Al!… He said…ME ???? I said..He knows you, he trusts you…do it… Caleb came up whining.. but alive… I then told Mark that we only had a few weeks to go and I wanted him to swim… Well, Holding Caleb VERY close to his body he slowly made his way to the middle of the pool (away from the safety of the edges) and began the slow walk of shame…If you’ve never been to a High School swimming pool..the sound is intense…it vibrates off every beam and tile… The sound of Caleb’s low whine of….”I’m gonna die”… “Waaaahhh…” (yes…he actually said waaaahhh) and “help me….” the whole time craning his neck to watch me… (not to mention the pained looks I got from the instuctor) while I sat idlely by in the stands with the towels waving and saying…yea for Caleb!… Good Job!!  He actually progressed fairly quickly after that day and looked forward to the rest of the lessons…This experience will serve as a good lesson in facing our fears in the future… I can’t wait to sign him up for more things…hmmmm… maybe…
