Real Stories From The Chaotic Front

Good Night, Sleep Tight

Turning off the bedroom light and tucking in my little ones I turned first to Hayden and said, “Good Night, Sleep Tight” and he responded with “Don’t Let the Bedbugs Bite!”, Next was Caleb, “Good Night, Sleep Tight” and he responded with “Dream of Bedbugs Tonight” (from Lion King), Last but not least Ian. “Good Night, Sleep Tight” and he pulled the covers all the way up and said. “DON’T Let those Bugs Eat You!”  My eyes opened wide and the brothers started giggling…For that, he got an extra kiss…oh so cute.

New Years Resolutions

I know this is a bit early but a co-worker was looking for copy for the next Employee Newsletter and asked us each to submit a resolution. Do you set a New Years Resolution? I normally don’t. Not because I’m perfect (hardly) but because it’s too much work to try to change one more thing. When I do set a resolution I give it an honest try. I gave it some thought and came up with a few sarcastic glib responses. What I settled on is reading to my children on a more consistent basis. Each of my work weeks include three nights. On the other days..I’m darn tired when bedtime rolls around. If the little ones are awake when I get home I will sit in their room and read a book or two before sitting sentinel and reading my own (I read constantly-just adult books and umm not aloud).  I do however consistently bring home an endless supply of childrens material from the library.  I’ve started chapter books and found that they want me to complete the entire thing in one sitting. My kids are smart enough to have figured out they will  forget the plot by the time I get back around to finishing. Well tonight, bedtime found me both off work and with an armload of age appropriate books to read. My sister was just leaving (she dropped of Cinnabon -that we shared- and Christmas decorations…XOXO LUCY!). I told the boys to get in bed and I’d be there in a minute. I turned to her and said- don’t you just hate when you open a kids book and think ” OH MY GOD! THERE ARE SO MANY WORDS !!! (her response-after giggling- “sounds like a blog.”) I swear I’m a Great Good…

btw. I read every single one of them!

We listen to Audio books all the time in the car…Maybe Santa will bring a CD player for the bedroom this year…hmmmm

Sleep??? Do I Sleep???

Even though I have a beautiful Log Cabin-ish bunk bed set for my kids, my children sleep like puppies in a basket. No matter where you start them off for bed they end up together and worse yet…with me. My little ones, though ages 8, 7 and 6, still do not sleep through the night. When I asked the Dr. about this, his stellar response was…”Some kids never sleep through the night”….AUGH! Just getting them to go to sleep requires patience of a Saint and the stamina of an Olympian. My mom…who babysits most nights can attest to this. Generally I will walk in the door and she has fallen asleep in a chair, (book or boy still clutched in her hands) head thrown back and mouth open wide. The boys, still awake are attempting a stealth maneuver to turn on and watch their TV with minimal sound.  I’ve tried everything suggested in the books and added a  few threats and or bribes on top of that. They will always have questions and hugs saved up from the day in an attempt at cuteness that will allow them more time up. The longer they stay awake at night is in equal balance to how hard it is for them to stay awake come morning…I am always anxious for them to go to sleep. This is my time to unwind, read books and watch reality TV. Not only is it hard for them to fall asleep my Hayden is a sleepwalker…When he does fall asleep Gavin (big brother)  and I CAN’T for several hours. We wait in tandem for the inevitable journey to ??? He will attempt to use the bathroom, check the mail, etc..but…mostly I will turn my head and find that he has silently snuck up on where ever I am. He waits…zombie like for instructions…Generally I can say…go back to bed…and he will find the nearest comfy chair or couch and instantaneously fall right back into a deep sleep…But always…always come sun up, I find that my 3 littlest have practiced their combined nocturnal Ninja skills and emptied their beds of blankets and pillows and piled themselves and the mass of covers right next to my bed…When the alarm goes off I can’t get to it until I find a path through the arms and legs maze that is my children…I get up..get them dressed…out the door for school…and wonder if I have time for a nap before starting my day….hmmm…only 15 hours til we do this again….
