Recipe For Chaos

Real Stories From The Chaotic Front

October = Movies

We have unofficially declared October “Movie Month”. I’ve brought home more movies this month than all other months combined. No reason…No advanced planning…Along with every kids new release I could get my hands on, I had the desire to introduce my little ones to more “vintage” films….. We’ve watched “Goonies”, “Gremlins I and II”. “Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein”, “The Super Mario Brothers”, “Ninja Turtles”, “It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown” and a slew of shows my generation was only able to watch on Saturday Mornings..Land of the Lost was a surprise favorite. (I’m still trying to get my hands on a DVD of the “Banana Splits”). On my nights off we would get in our PJ’s early. They would climb into bed and I would climb into the leather chair with high expectations of watching the movies with them. Or…try to watch between saying…”Stop asking so many questions and watch!!!!” “If you just watch you’ll find out…” “Stop taking your brothers blanket, pillow (insert any object here)” etc. etc…(I know you’ve been there!)
Gavin did not leave movie month unscathed either. On nights when he was home I would unfailingly ask him if he would watch a movie with me. Generally we don’t start until almost midnight. I brought home all manor of movies. We watched a Japanese film with English sub-titles, a myriad of English films and a LOT of corny current American films. Last night I gave him a choice..It was between “Definitely, Maybe” (2008) and “The Ghost and Mrs. Muir” (1947)… He looked at the movies…he looked at me and said…”This is like making the choice between being SHOT or STABBED!!!”. So..he did what I thought he would do…He sat in an adjoining chair, smile on his face, computer in his lap…and waited for the phone to ring with a better offer..(which came…He dumped me for coffee ..). He did return for the ending and the “So..what did I miss?”. line..
Really, what more can a mom ask for…a few minutes with your kids…doing something that maybe one day they’ll remember and say..My mom and I used to…
